{"id":279,"date":"2025-10-06T04:44:15","date_gmt":"2025-10-06T04:44:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yarima.org\/?p=279"},"modified":"2025-10-06T04:44:15","modified_gmt":"2025-10-06T04:44:15","slug":"%f0%9f%a6%a0-who-warns-not-enough-new-antibiotics-to-fight-drug-resistant-infections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yarima.org\/?p=279","title":{"rendered":"\ud83e\udda0 WHO Warns: Not Enough New Antibiotics to Fight Drug-Resistant Infections"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Date:<\/strong> October 2, 2025<br><strong>Source:<\/strong> World Health Organization (WHO)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What\u2019s Happening<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>World Health Organization (WHO)<\/strong> has released a new report showing that there are <strong>too few new antibiotics and diagnostic tools<\/strong> being developed to fight <strong>drug-resistant bacteria<\/strong> \u2014 one of the biggest health threats in the world today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) happens when bacteria, viruses, and fungi no longer respond to medicines \u2014 making infections harder to treat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udea8 Too Few New Antibiotics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>WHO\u2019s latest review found that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The number of antibacterials in development dropped from <strong>97 in 2023 to only 90 in 2025.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Of these, only <strong>15 are truly innovative<\/strong>, and <strong>just 5<\/strong> work against the most dangerous \u201ccritical\u201d bacteria.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Since 2017, <strong>17 new antibiotics<\/strong> have been approved \u2014 but <strong>only two<\/strong> belong to new chemical classes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In short: the world\u2019s antibiotic pipeline is <strong>shrinking and not innovative enough<\/strong> to keep up with growing resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83e\uddea Diagnostic Tools Still Lagging Behind<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The report also warns that many health facilities \u2014 especially in <strong>low- and middle-income countries<\/strong> \u2014 don\u2019t have access to the tools needed to identify bacterial infections quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Current gaps include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A lack of <strong>fast, simple tests<\/strong> for detecting bacteria in blood without long lab cultures.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Limited <strong>biomarker tests<\/strong> to tell the difference between bacterial and viral infections.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Too few <strong>point-of-care diagnostic tools<\/strong> that can be used in small clinics or remote areas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Without these tools, doctors often have to <strong>guess the infection type<\/strong>, which can lead to unnecessary antibiotic use \u2014 and more resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udcac WHO\u2019s Message<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cAntimicrobial resistance is escalating, but the pipeline of new treatments and diagnostics is insufficient,\u201d said Dr. Yukiko Nakatani, WHO Assistant Director-General for Health Systems.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The WHO is calling for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>More investment<\/strong> in antibiotic research and development.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Stronger support<\/strong> for small companies creating new treatments.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Affordable diagnostic tools<\/strong> for resource-limited countries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\udf0d Why It Matters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Without new antibiotics and better diagnostic tools, common infections \u2014 like pneumonia, urinary tract infections, or wound infections \u2014 could once again become <strong>deadly<\/strong>.<br>The WHO\u2019s report is a global reminder that fighting <strong>antimicrobial resistance<\/strong> requires innovation, funding, and global teamwork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udcda Source<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>World Health Organization (WHO).
