A new <strong>WHO Global Tobacco Trends Report<\/strong> reveals that global tobacco use has dropped from <strong>1.38 billion users in 2000 to 1.2 billion in 2024<\/strong> \u2014 a 27% decline. However, <strong>1 in 5 adults<\/strong> still uses tobacco or nicotine products, causing millions of preventable deaths every year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe tobacco industry is now targeting young people with e-cigarettes and nicotine pouches,\u201d warned <strong>Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus<\/strong>, WHO Director-General.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26a0\ufe0f Rise of E-Cigarettes and Vaping<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For the first time, WHO included data on <strong>e-cigarette use<\/strong>, revealing over <strong>100 million global users<\/strong>, including <strong>15 million adolescents<\/strong> aged 13\u201315. Children are <strong>nine times more likely than adults<\/strong> to vape, raising concerns about a new generation addicted to nicotine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>WHO officials say that e-cigarettes marketed as \u201charm reduction\u201d are actually <strong>creating new nicotine addictions<\/strong> and undermining decades of anti-tobacco progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udc69\u200d\u2695\ufe0f Women Leading Tobacco Quitting Trends<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Women have shown remarkable progress in quitting tobacco. Between 2010 and 2024, female tobacco use dropped from <strong>11% to 6.6%<\/strong>, meeting the <strong>2030 reduction goal five years early<\/strong>.<br>In contrast, men \u2014 who make up <strong>80% of all tobacco users<\/strong> \u2014 are not expected to meet targets until <strong>2031<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\udf0d Global Tobacco Use by Region<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>South-East Asia:<\/strong> Major progress, men\u2019s use down from 70% to 37%.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Africa:<\/strong> Lowest prevalence (9.5%) but rising absolute numbers due to population growth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Americas:<\/strong> 36% reduction, now at 14%.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Europe:<\/strong> Highest adult prevalence (24.1%), with women leading global rates at 17.4%.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Eastern Mediterranean:<\/strong> Tobacco use rising in some nations (18%).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Western Pacific:<\/strong> Slowest progress \u2014 men\u2019s use remains high at 43.3%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\uded1 WHO Calls for Stronger Tobacco Control<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>WHO urges all governments to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Enforce the <strong>MPOWER<\/strong> measures and <strong>WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ban tobacco and e-cigarette advertising<\/strong> targeting youth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Raise taxes<\/strong> on tobacco and nicotine products.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Expand <strong>cessation programs<\/strong> to help millions quit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cNearly 20% of adults still use tobacco \u2014 the progress is real but not enough,\u201d said <strong>Dr. Jeremy Farrar<\/strong>, WHO Assistant Director-General.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83e\uddfe About the Report<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>2025 WHO Global Report on Tobacco Use<\/strong> is based on <strong>2,034 national surveys<\/strong> covering <strong>97% of the global population<\/strong>.
