in <strong>Rio de Janeiro, Brazil<\/strong>, gathering researchers, practitioners, and policymakers from across the globe.<br>The event coincided with the adoption of the <strong>WHO Global Traditional Medicine Strategy 2025\u20132034<\/strong>, marking a new decade of action to integrate traditional medicine safely and effectively into global health systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\udf3f <strong>A Global Commitment to Integrative Health<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Congress \u2014 which also represented the <strong>20th International Congress on TCIM Research<\/strong> and the <strong>17th European Congress on Integrative Medicine<\/strong> \u2014 explored innovative ways to strengthen public health by combining <strong>ancient wisdom with modern science<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A message on behalf of <strong>WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus<\/strong> emphasized that traditional medicine plays a growing role in improving <strong>health equity and community resilience<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The WHO reaffirmed its dedication through the <strong>Global Traditional Medicine Centre (GTMC)<\/strong>, which \u201cbridges traditional knowledge and modern science\u201d by advancing <strong>research, standards, and innovation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The statement also announced that the <strong>Second WHO Global Summit on Traditional Medicine<\/strong> will be held in <strong>New Delhi from 17\u201319 December 2025<\/strong>, where new <strong>evidence-to-policy tools<\/strong> will be unveiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83e\udde0 <strong>Four Objectives of the Global Traditional Medicine Strategy<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In a recorded address, <strong>Dr Shyama Kuruvilla<\/strong>, Acting Director of the GTMC, outlined the <strong>four key goals<\/strong> of the WHO Global Traditional Medicine Strategy 2025\u20132034:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Strengthen the evidence base<\/strong> through research and data.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ensure quality and safety<\/strong> with effective regulation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Integrate TCIM into national health systems.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Foster global collaboration and partnerships.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Kuruvilla noted that the GTMC\u2019s mission is to support countries in translating these principles into <strong>action and measurable health outcomes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udcda <strong>Building the World\u2019s Largest Traditional Medicine Library<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A key highlight of the Congress was the announcement of the <strong>WHO Traditional Medicine Global Library<\/strong>, a major digital initiative led by <strong>BIREME\/PAHO\/WHO<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The library \u2014 described by <strong>Dr Jo\u00e3o Paulo Souza<\/strong> as a tool to \u201cfacilitate collaboration, research and safe implementation of TCIM\u201d \u2014 will host over <strong>1.5 million records<\/strong>, including <strong>research papers, evidence maps, policies, and multimedia materials<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once launched, it will become the <strong>most comprehensive digital knowledge repository<\/strong> for traditional and integrative medicine worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\udf0f <strong>Trends and Challenges in Traditional Medicine<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In his keynote, <strong>Dr Sangyoung Ahn<\/strong> of WHO presented data from the <strong>Third Global Survey on TCIM<\/strong>, showing that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Around <strong>two-thirds of countries<\/strong> report that <strong>40\u201390% of their populations<\/strong> use traditional or complementary medicine.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>76% of Member States<\/strong> said people mainly seek TCIM to manage <strong>noncommunicable diseases<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nearly <strong>90% of TCIM practitioners<\/strong> operate in the <strong>private sector<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>However, challenges remain:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Only <strong>1% of global health research funding<\/strong> goes to traditional medicine.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Many countries lack <strong>regulatory systems<\/strong> for TCIM practices and products.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are <strong>gaps in research data and funding mechanisms<\/strong> to evaluate effectiveness and safety.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Ahn reaffirmed WHO\u2019s commitment to helping countries <strong>implement and monitor<\/strong> the Global Strategy and to develop <strong>national indicators<\/strong> for progress tracking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\udf3f <strong>Looking Ahead: WHO Global Summit on Traditional Medicine<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The upcoming <strong>Second WHO Global Summit on Traditional Medicine (New Delhi, 17\u201319 December 2025)<\/strong> will explore the <strong>science and innovation shaping TCIM<\/strong>, showcase <strong>new research tools and products<\/strong>, and highlight <strong>global pledges<\/strong> for strengthening evidence-based traditional medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator
